Portraits: A unique way to immortalize a loved one.
Portraits are a special way to create a lasting memory. Long before photography, portraits were a way to capture someone’s image and immortalize the subject. Now, it’s never been easier to take a photo of yourself, a friend, a loved one, a pet, anyone! A painting or a drawing is still a unique way of capturing someone’s image by leaving the subject open to the style and skill of the artist. It carries with it the knowledge that so much time and energy went into its creation. A gift of a portrait, perhaps a portrait of yourself given to someone special, can be treasured for a lifetime.
While the wealthy and powerful and the gods themselves were once the subjects of portraits, now it can be anyone. Even a beloved pet! Who do you want your portrait to focus on? One of yourself, perhaps? Maybe a parent or grandparent. Or it could even be a character from your own short story or D&D game!
Who is the subject of the portrait?
While the wealthy and powerful and the gods themselves were once the subjects of portraits, now it can be anyone. Even a beloved pet! Who do you want your portrait to focus on? One of yourself, perhaps? Maybe a parent or grandparent. Or it could even be a character from your own short story or D&D game!
Pet portraits are a great way of capturing your greatest companion and can be easily shared for anyone who would be delighted to see your furry (or feathered, or scaled) friend!
Group portraits can also be great for family gifts, greeting cards, and treasured artwork to put on display in your home. Will it be a group of long-time friends or your whole family together? Couple’s portraits are perfect for holiday cards or for weddings: either on invitations or displayed at the reception!
Whoever the focus is, it’s important to make sure their image is captured just the way you imagine!
What kind of medium? A painting or a drawing?
Choosing your preferred medium is important. Paintings denote an air of class and have an old-time feel. They can also highlight a funny pose or scene by clashing the “upper-class” sensibility of a painting with something goofy or silly. Drawings are more casual and offer lots of variety. Pencil drawings can be quite classy as well and are reminiscent of black-and-white photos. Marker can bring a lot of vibrance and colour, and lends itself well to a more comic or cartoon illustrated look. Digital is an option as well, and it can combine the best of both worlds. Getting started on some portraits!
I’ve been creating artwork ever since I could first pick up a pencil. I love being a Saskatoon artist, and bringing so many fun commissions to life through painted and drawn portraits. I would be honoured to create the artwork of someone special to you.
The process is pretty simple. Let me know your subject (or subjects) and preferred medium. I can offer suggestions, too, if you’re not sure which is best. Reference photos will be important, too!
I can then provide a quote. I base my prices on how long it will take to create the portrait. Time will vary depending on the level of detail you want, the number of subjects, and the number of revisions that need to be done. My rate is based on $75/hour and I’ve included some examples throughout this article to help give you an idea of how long a project has taken me. I have more info on my commission page as well.
