Making Art with Audra Balion

Audra has a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan, specializing in painting and sculpture. Since then, she has become well-known for her illustrations and for encouraging folks of all ages to embrace the joy of creating art. Her silent graphic novel Flight Nineteen puts an acute focus on visual storytelling that has made her stand out within the space.

Audra has taught at both her downtown studio in the Drinkle Mall as well as at the Gail Adams School of Art. With the recent closure of Gail Adams, she is delighted to open up her studio for both youths and adults for drawing classes.

Figure Drawing Classes in Comic Style

Did you know drawing figures doesn’t have to be too hard? You can actually start with a stick man, and work your way up in detail. Really! Let Audra show you how.

In this class, Audra will teach students the processes of figure drawing and character design. This is a great start if you want to develop your drawing for comics, cartoons, or just to draw your TTRPG characters. It is also a good base if you then want to take off into realism by adding more detail.

Each class will begin with a lesson, followed by drawing time, with a given exercise. The lessons are designed for beginners, however, small class sizes allow Audra to assess students individually, based on their current skill levels, knowledge, experience, and goals. Students may be given alternate/advanced lessons and exercises depending on their needs.

Comics! Classes

In this class, Audra will teach students the fundamentals of comic creation, including the art of visual storytelling.

Each class will begin with a lesson, followed by drawing time, with a given exercise. Audra is a comic creator and a visual storyteller. She has given visual storytelling lectures and led art workshops at conventions and classrooms across Saskatchewan for both children and adults. She has taught for the Gail Adams School of Art and has been a guest at Sask Entertainment Expo and Ganbatte Anime Con. Her graphic novel, Flight Nineteen, won Sequential Magazine’s Favourite Colourist award in 2021.
